All styles of Indian classical dance ~ bharata natyam, odissi, kathak, kuchupudi, manipuri, mohini attam, kathakali and chau ~ are strongly rooted in mythical themes: stories of victory over evil, love in all its forms, devotion and praise towards one of the many gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. They explore and transcend the best and worst in human emotions and relationships, and evoke a closeness to nature, animals, the seasons and the elements. In this spirit, these dance forms are also performed as a form of  Yoga, a way to reach a supreme reality that ultimately leads to liberation, “moksha”.  Hence the name of our dance festival, “GAIT TO THE SPIRIT ” ~ a swaying step, a walk with grace, a dance into the Infinite.

The GAIT TO THE SPIRIT dance festival was inaugurated in 2010 under the initiative of artistic director and curator Jai Govinda with the support of the Dance Centre. This Mandala Arts & Culture annual production presents some of the very best in the Indian classical dance field, with performances, lecture-demonstrations and master classes, over a four day period. Amongst the renowned artists presented so far have been: Priyadarsini Govind, Rahul Acharya, Janaki Rangarajan, Aakash Odedra and Savitha Sastry. The festival also offers an opportunity for performances by local talents and blossoming artists.

Funded by the City of Vancouver, the B.C. Arts Council, the B.C. Gaming Office, the Canada Arts Training Fund of Heritage Canada and the Vancouver Dance Centre, GAIT TO THE SPIRIT is quickly becoming a celebrated event anticipated yearly by dance and culture lovers in the arts life of the city.  Please do not hesitate to contact Jai Govinda, the society’s Artistic Managing Director, with any questions, or if you require more information at 604-874-8985.
