It gives Mandala Arts and Culture an immense pleasure to announce that Smt. Jamuna Krishnan, Jai Govinda’s foremost bharata natyam guru, has received the 2013 “SANGEET NATAK AKADEMY AWARD” (Akademy Puraskar) for her 40 years of exceptional work in the field of bharata natyam! The Award will be presented by the president of India at a special ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan – Delhi, in April 2014.
 A well established and renowned bharata natyam dancer, choreographer, composer, scholar and teacher, Smt. Jamuna Krishnan’s passion for bharata natyam was nurtured by late K.J. Govindarajan and Padmabushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayan. Born in a family of musicians, Jamuna also immerse herself into the study of carnatic music with late Vidwan S. Gopalakrishna.
 Her deep involvement into the studies of music and dance led her to extensive research of the poetic works of several well known composers such as Vidyapati, Surdas, Mira, Kabir etc., thereby enriching the traditional bharata natyam repertoire.
 Amongst the many awards she has received for the excellence of her work in bharata natyam are:

 Smt Jamuna Krishnan is the artistic director of Kalangan, Centre for classical arts in New Delhi – India, where she continues to teach and create. Over the past few years, Kalangan has also presented some 180 performances by well known musicians and dancers. Her daughter and disciple, Ragini Chandrasekar is also an established dancer in the capital.
